The Foxtrot dance originated with the vaudeville actor Harry Fox. The New York Theater was being converted into a movie house in 1914, and decided to add vaudeville acts between shows. Harry Fox was asked to put on a dancing act. Part of it included trotting steps performed to ragtime music. The people who saw it, began referring to it as 'Fox's Trot'.
