Chai Tea Characteristics and Benefits
Originating in India, Masala Chai translates to “spiced tea”. In the West, “chai” commonly refers to teas and tisanes blended with warming spices for a comforting, uplifting brew. Our chai blends combine quality tea leaves (or herbal bases) with carefully chosen spices to deliver bold flavour and aromatic warmth, with ingredients such as ginger, clove, and turmeric often appreciated for their naturally supportive properties. Flavour profiles can range from sweet, cinnamon-forward cups to ginger-led blends with a lively kick. These spice combinations are also known for naturally occurring antioxidants and are traditionally associated with supporting digestion and overall wellbeing - a delicious balance of taste and comfort in one mug.
Loose, Bagged and Iced
Our chai teas are available in loose leaf form, with selected blends also offered in pyramid tea bags and iced-tea pouches. To make sampling simple, our chai tea sampler includes single-serve loose leaf portion packs, ideal for brewing at home, at work, or wherever you fancy a spiced cup.
Does loose-leaf tea contain caffeine?
Yes - loose leaf chai tea can naturally contain caffeine. Chai blends made from whole tea leaves typically provide around 40-70 mg of caffeine per cup (about 250 ml). The exact amount varies by tea type, steeping time, and water temperature. If you’d like a lower-caffeine option, explore our decaffeinated black teas or caffeine-free herbal blends.
How long should loose-leaf chai tea be steeped?
Steep loose leaf chai tea for 3-5 minutes in freshly boiled water (100°C). That said, chais can be brewed even longer, so do not hesitate to experiment with infusions up to 10 minutes and beyond. Longer steeping produces a bolder cup; shorter steeping keeps it lighter and brighter.
