You’ve all heard of teatime, that lovely slice of the afternoon where “everything stops for tea” (or, if you love tea as much as we do, the time known as “any time of the day”), but have you heard of Tea Garden Time? Also known as Bagan Time, it is one hour ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST), and is a time zone used exclusively in Assam’s tea gardens. Originally introduced by the British to accommodate earlier sunrises in the region, it has been in place ever since, helping tea garden workers complete their work during daylight hours.

About Assam Melody - Classic Indian Black Tea

Assam Melody is a classic loose leaf Assam from the fertile lowlands of the Meleng Tea Estate in Assam, India. Once infused, it yields a dark burgundy-red liquor with a warming fragrance and a satisfyingly rounded texture. Expect a sturdy, malty sweetness underpinned by gentle starchy and woody tones, making it a reliable everyday black tea with true Assam character.

Flavour Profile & Character

In the cup, Assam Melody leans rich and malty with a natural sweetness that can suggest molasses or dried fruit, alongside a subtle roasted note. It finishes bright and brisk while remaining smooth, avoiding harsh tannins. This makes it equally suited to a strong morning brew or a more relaxed afternoon steep.

Brewing Tips for Best Flavor

Use freshly boiled water at 100°C and infuse for 3-5 minutes to bring out its full body and depth. Prefer a lighter, cleaner taste? Pull it a little earlier to keep the briskness while softening the heavier notes. It takes milk well, and a small amount of sugar or honey can emphasise the malty sweetness if you like a more traditional style.

Origin & Tea Tradition

Assam is one of the world’s most celebrated black tea regions, valued for its full-bodied teas, lively briskness, and deep colour in the cup. Warm temperatures, generous rainfall, and rich soils help shape the bold profile that Assam is known for. Assam Melody reflects this heritage beautifully, whether enjoyed on its own or used as a backbone in breakfast-style blends.

Versatility & Pairing

With its assertive flavour and sturdy structure, Assam Melody is ideal for spiced tea and blending - a natural base for homemade chai or for pairing with hearty breakfast dishes and baked goods. It also offers a satisfying caffeine lift, delivering energy alongside a rich, comforting flavour.
